The parcel has arrived and the size label looks right. Before taking the outfit outside, try it on indoors for a short, supervised check. Measurements help you order; seeing how the garment sits and moves helps you judge the result.

Before you begin

Read the item's fastening and care instructions. Check the store's return conditions before removing tags or using the garment outdoors. Open any fastenings fully and do not force your dog's head or legs through a tight opening.

Check four areas while your dog stands naturally

  • Neckline: it should not pull tightly, press into the throat or ride up toward the face. A hood should stay clear of the eyes.
  • Chest and shoulders: look for strained fastenings, fabric pulling across the chest or seams pressing into the underarms.
  • Back: check where the hem ends. It should not bunch around the tail or pull the neckline backward.
  • Belly and legs: make sure the opening leaves room for toilet breaks and that cuffs or hanging fabric do not catch under the feet.

Watch a little ordinary movement

Let your dog take a few steps, turn, sit and stand. Watch for fabric twisting, sleeves slipping, fastenings pulling apart or a change from their usual movement. Do not make them keep wearing an outfit they resist or appear uncomfortable in; remove it and reassess the size or cut.

Clothing and walking equipment are separate checks

A decorative loop, button or garment opening is not automatically a leash attachment. Use walking equipment according to its own instructions. If clothing is worn with a harness, check both together rather than assuming the fit stays unchanged.

If it does not fit, pause before sizing up

Compare the problem area with the product chart. A larger size may add unwanted back length without solving the cut. Revisit chest-versus-back fit, or send our contact page your dog's measurements and the product name so we can help clarify the listing.

Keep the Fit Guide handy for your next comparison. There is no single size that works across every outfit.
